PlayTheRiver.com was started in 2007 by Nate Calhoun.

Growing up in Friendsville Maryland, Nate was paddling the Upper Yough when he was 14 years old. He attended Garrett College's Adventure Sports institute when he was 17 and was on there freestyle kayaking team. That same year he placed 15th in the country in the Junior Mens freestyle kayaking devision. He also has attended Burlington College of fine Arts were he studied film production when he was 19.

Nate was raised by his uncle Crede Calhoun, a well known professional photographer in the tri-state erea, which helped mold Nate in the direction of becoming a professional photographer himself.
